After months of fielding complaints for removing the service, Google is once again allowing Gmail users to make free telephone calls directly from their inbox, all without any kind of service contract or landline phone. Here’s how to use it.

First, you’ll first need to install Google’s voice and video chat software. Then, just sign in to your Gmail account and look for the telephone handset icon in the left-most column of the screen, right above your list of online chat contacts. Clicking the phone icon will bring up a tiny pop-up window with a phone keypad, and … well, you should be able to take it from there.

Of course, you’ll need to have a headphone set with a mic hooked up to your computer for people to be able to hear you during the call. Most modern laptops already have microphones built in, so chances are you already have everything you need to make a phone call right now.

Calls to anywhere in the United States and Canada are free from most countries. You’ll need to pay to make international calls, but Google’s rates are fairly low. More details are available at the Official Gmail Blog.

If you’re interested in other ways to make free telephone calls via the Internet, we’ve got you covered there. Read up on how to make a free voice call through Facebook. And, of course, you can still make a free video or voice call using Skype on your desktop, iPhone or Android device.

Did you know that you can make calls from your Gmail account free to U.S. and Canadian Phone Numbers?Gmail Voice has made it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. This used to required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time.

BUT now, you can use your Gmail Voice to call people directly on their phones!!!

Calls to the U.S. and Canada (from the U.S. or Canada) will be free for at least the rest of the year (2010) and calls to other countries will be billed at  very low rates.

Here’s how you set it up.  It takes less than 5 minutes.

(If you don’t have one, get one!  It is the best email client I have ever used.  Get one here:

note: this may already be done. if so, got to next step.

Follow the instructions to add application.  You will have to install a small executable and run it for you to use GOOGLE VOICE. It takes about 3 minutes to set-up.

(Keep in mind that international calls will cost you. Also, this application is free for 2010, but may end up costing 2011.)*This is my first Instructable.  Please comment and leave suggestions or positive/negative feedback.  Thanks.

If you have friends, family, and business associates overseas that you talk to, you know it’s not cheap.  Most phone plans have hefty charges for international calling, so staying in touch can leave you with a fat bill at the end of the month.  You can try using phone cards, but the savings are not always impressive, and it can be a hassle to deal with all those PIN numbers.

While there are ways to communicate cheaply through services such as Skype, free calling generally requires both parties to be at their PC when talking, or the use of inconvenient Wi-fi access during the call.

Now however, there is a new company that has developed some very clever programs that allow you to easily call anyone at hugely reduced rates. And, if you’re calling to one of 50 different countries, you can make the call for free. The service is called Rebtel, and they’ve been building their international presence since 2006.  Today, they have over 10 million users—so, they must be doing something right!

How does it work?  Simply sign up on their website and then enter the names and numbers of the people you frequently call overseas.  The system will immediately create and send you a unique local number for each of your contacts.

Then, rather than dialing the international number to reach your party, you just dial the local number Rebtel provides you with.  Rebtels’s servers connect the call through the Internet at a tiny fraction of the cost you’d pay through a typical service plan.

Just how low are the rates?  To see how cheap it is to call your friends or family overseas – just select their location on the calling guide to the right. You’ll be amazed by these rates.

Now, the even better part: completely free calls.  To make a free call, the only requirements are for both parties to have an unlimited calling plan with their local landline company (most people do), and they must live in one of the 50 countries in Rebtel’s free network (again, most do).

The next step is to call them through the new local number Rebtel provides. When they receive the call, they can call you back on the incoming number that shows up their phone with your call.  This will be a local number, so it’s no cost for them to call you, and the conversation will be free.  It’s a remarkably simple and easy process.

Rebtel also has free apps for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry smart phones.  These allow you to automatically create and store numbers on your cell phone for your international contacts, so you can use your contacts and speed-dial to make both free and low-cost calls from these devices.

The quality of Rebtel calls is excellent and the company takes customer satisfaction very seriously.  They have made a considerable investment in taking care of their customers.  Their customer satisfaction is extremely high, with 96.7 percent of users saying they would recommend Rebtel to a friend.

Even better, right now, HowLifeWorks readers can get an additional 50% discount on their first $10 in calls. Just enter voucher code: rebtel50% when you sign up.

Skype logoSkype /ˈskaɪp/ is a telecommunications application software that specializes in providing video chat and voice calls from computers, tablets and mobile devices via the Internet to other devices or telephones/smartphones. Users can also send instant messages, exchange files and images, send video messages and create conference calls. Skype is available to download onto computers running Microsoft Windows, Mac or Linux, as well as Android, Blackberry, iOS and Windows Phone smartphones and tablets. Much of the service is free but users require Skype Credit or a subscription to call landline or mobile numbers. Skype is based on a freemium model.

First released in August 2003, Skype was created by Dane Janus Friis and Swede Niklas Zennström in cooperation with Estonians Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn, who developed the backend which was also used in music-sharing application Kazaa. In September 2005, eBay acquired Skype for $2.6 billion. In September 2009, Silver Lake, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board announced the acquisition of 65% of Skype for $1.9 billion from eBay, valuing the business at $2.75 billion. Skype was later acquired by Microsoft in May 2011 for $8.5 billion. Microsoft’s Skype division headquarters are in Luxembourg, but most of the development team and 44% of the overall employees of the division are still situated in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.

Skype allows users to communicate by voice using a microphone, video by using a webcam, and instant messaging over the Internet. Skype-to-Skype calls to other users are free of charge, while calls to landline telephones and mobile phones (over traditional telephone networks) are charged via a debit-based user account system called Skype Credit.

Unlike most other VoIP services, Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client–server system. It makes use of background processing on computers running Skype software, and this is reflected in Skype’s original proposed name of Sky Peer-to-Peer.

Some network administrators have banned Skype on corporate, government, home and education networks,  citing reasons such as inappropriate usage of resources, excessive bandwidth usage, and security concerns.
